MarkItDown is a browser-based document converter that turns files into clean Markdown for AI workflows, inspired by and running Microsoft's open-source MarkItDown utility on the server side without requiring anyone to install Python. It handles a wide input set — PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLS and XLSX, HTML, TXT and MD, CSV and TSV, JSON and XML, EPUB, Jupyter notebooks, public URLs, pasted tables and image OCR for PNG, JPG and WebP — and offers a choice that most online converters do not: Local mode keeps supported files entirely inside the browser so nothing is uploaded at all, while Server mode uses the hosted MarkItDown engine and deletes the upload immediately after processing. You can convert up to three files with no account. The site is candid about output quality in a way that is unusual for the category: it publishes eleven real conversions — PDF, Excel, scans, LaTeX and Mermaid — unedited and with their limits shown, so you can judge fidelity before trusting it with anything that matters.
