Best Free Play.ht Alternatives in 2026
This is not a price complaint either. Play.ht is gone. Checked on 27 September 2026: play.ht has no A record at all, its nameservers now point at Meta, api.play.ht resolves to an AWS load-balancer name that no longer exists, and app.play.ht serves an expired TLS certificate. These 6 tools are where the job goes next — and the four we could verify are ranked above the two we could not.
Play.ht is discontinued
Absorbed into Meta with the PlayAI voice team; the standalone product, its API and its domain were retired. Nothing on this page can be signed up for any more — the prices below are kept as a record of what Play.ht used to cost, not as an offer. Verified 2026-09-27.
Where Play.ht users went →Quick Answer
Pick by how you actually used Play.ht:
- You called api.play.ht from code: ElevenLabs if quality decides it, Cartesia if latency does. Both stream; both have a free tier big enough to port and test before you pay.
- You generated long-form narration at volume: Unreal Speech — 250,000 free characters a month, roughly six hours of audio, and character quotas you can forecast.
- You want commercial rights for the least money: Cartesia Pro at $5/mo, or ElevenLabs Starter at $6/mo. No free tier on this page grants them except Deepgram's metered credit.
- You hate subscriptions: Deepgram — $200 of credit with no expiry and no card required.
- You were listening to documents, not publishing audio: NaturalReader, with the caveat below that we could not re-read its plan limits today.

I built one — list it →What Actually Happened to Play.ht
Nobody published a shutdown banner, which is why stale "best AI voice generator" lists — including, until today, several of ours — still carried Play.ht with a free-tier figure next to it. Here is what four DNS and HTTP checks returned on 27 September 2026:
- play.ht has no address record. A plain request returns Could not resolve host: play.ht. The domain still exists, but nothing is published at the apex.
- Its nameservers are Meta's. play.ht delegates to a.ns / b.ns / c.ns / d.ns.facebook.com, and so does play.ai. That is the fingerprint of an acquisition: the PlayAI voice team went to Meta, and the domains went with them.
- The API host is a dangling CNAME. api.play.ht still points at chirpy-production-…us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com, and that load balancer no longer resolves. An integration against it fails at DNS, before any retry logic or fallback you wrote gets a chance to run.
- The app subdomain has an expired certificate. app.play.ht still resolves to Vercel but its TLS certificate has expired, so a browser refuses the connection outright.
- playht.com is a parking page. It answers HTTP 200, which is exactly the trap: a liveness check that only looks at a status code would call Play.ht healthy. Its nameservers are ParkLogic's, and the body is a redirect shell.
Practically: there is no signup, no dashboard, no API and no support address. If you hold credits, they are not recoverable. If you have an API key in production, it is already failing.
The 6 Best Free Play.ht Alternatives
ElevenLabs
Best Overall ReplacementThe closest like-for-like replacement for Play.ht's studio and its API
- Free tier
- $0/mo — 10,000 credits per month, text to speech, speech to text, sound effects, voice design, music, 3 Studio projects
- Paid from
- $6/mo Starter (commercial licence, instant voice cloning, 30,000 credits)
- Commercial use on free
- No — the commercial licence starts on Starter at $6/mo
- Voice cloning
- Instant cloning from $6/mo Starter; professional cloning from $22/mo Creator
- If you are porting the API
- Streaming and batch REST API, plus official SDKs. This is the migration most Play.ht API users take.
Strengths
- + Best prosody and emotional range in the category, which is what Play.ht's newer models were chasing
- + Streaming endpoint with low time-to-first-audio, so conversational agents work without a rewrite
- + Widest language coverage of the tools here, and dubbing is built in
- + Free tier is large enough to A/B your actual script rather than a demo clip
Limitations
- − The free tier explicitly excludes commercial use — if the audio ships to customers you need at least Starter
- − Credits, not characters: long-form narration burns the monthly allowance faster than a character quota reads
- − Professional voice cloning is two tiers up at $22/mo Creator

Cartesia
Biggest Free AllowanceBiggest genuinely free monthly allowance, and the cheapest commercial licence here
- Free tier
- $0/mo — 20,000 credits per month plus $1 of prepaid agent minutes, text to speech and speech to text, unlimited workspace seats
- Paid from
- $5/mo Pro (commercial use licence, instant voice cloning, 100,000 credits)
- Commercial use on free
- No — but the commercial licence is $5/mo, the cheapest on this page
- Voice cloning
- Instant cloning on Pro at $5/mo; professional cloning on Startup at $49/mo
- If you are porting the API
- Sonic TTS is API-first with a streaming endpoint; if you were using Play.ht for a voice agent, this is the closest architectural match.
Strengths
- + Twice ElevenLabs' free monthly allowance, with speech-to-text included in the same plan
- + Built for real-time voice agents rather than file export — the use case Play.ht's API was mostly serving
- + Unlimited workspace seats on every plan, including free
- + Startup tier at $49/mo lines up almost exactly with what Play.ht's API tier used to cost
Limitations
- − Smaller stock voice library than ElevenLabs — you will spend more time auditioning
- − Less tooling around long-form production (no studio timeline, no dubbing workflow)
- − Agent minutes are metered separately from TTS credits, which makes forecasting a two-variable job

Unreal Speech
Best for VolumeFree tier measured in hours, not minutes — the volume pick for long-form narration
- Free tier
- $0/mo — 250,000 characters per month, about 6 hours of audio
- Paid from
- $10/mo Starter (500,000 characters, about 11 hours)
- Commercial use on free
- Check the terms for your use case before shipping — the pricing page sells on volume, not licence tiers
- Voice cloning
- No voice cloning — this is a stock-voice engine (it runs Kokoro TTS)
- If you are porting the API
- Plain HTTP TTS API. The cheapest way to keep an automated narration pipeline running after Play.ht went away.
Strengths
- + 250,000 free characters a month is roughly 25x ElevenLabs' free allowance by volume
- + Character quotas, not credits, so cost per finished audiobook hour is trivially predictable
- + Basic tier is $49/mo list but $4.99/mo for the first six months, which makes a migration cheap to test
- + Best fit if Play.ht was generating hundreds of files for an e-learning or audiobook library
Limitations
- − Voice quality is a step below ElevenLabs — it is a Kokoro-based engine, not a frontier model
- − No cloning, so any Play.ht cloned voice you relied on cannot be reproduced here at all
- − Studio tooling is minimal; this is an API with a demo page attached

Deepgram
Best Non-Subscription$200 of credit that never expires — the free tier for people who hate subscriptions
- Free tier
- $200 credit on Pay As You Go, no minimums, no expiration, no credit card required
- Paid from
- Pay-as-you-go after the credit; Growth plans from $4,000+/year with prepaid credits
- Commercial use on free
- Yes — pay-as-you-go usage is commercial usage; there is no separate licence tier
- Voice cloning
- No consumer voice cloning — stock voices only
- If you are porting the API
- REST and WebSocket TTS with documented concurrency limits (up to 45 concurrent on the free tier), plus a Voice Agent API.
Strengths
- + The credit does not expire, so a low-volume integration can run for months at $0
- + Published concurrency numbers per plan, which almost nobody else in this category prints
- + Speech-to-text and TTS from one vendor and one key, useful if Play.ht was one half of a voice loop
- + Strongest documentation for production reliability questions (SLA, rate limits, fallbacks)
Limitations
- − Developer-first: there is no studio UI for a non-technical narrator to work in
- − Voice library is aimed at agents and telephony, not expressive narration
- − Once the $200 is spent, you are on metered pricing with no free monthly floor

NaturalReader
The listening use case, not the production one — free to hear, restricted to export
- Free tier
- Free plan with a daily listening allowance and a small set of basic voices; the online app renders its plan table client-side, so the exact figure could not be re-read on 27 September 2026
- Paid from
- Paid tiers add premium voices and audio download
- Commercial use on free
- No
- Voice cloning
- No
- If you are porting the API
- No production TTS API — if you came from Play.ht's API, this is not your replacement.
Strengths
- + If you used Play.ht to listen to your own documents rather than to publish audio, this is the direct swap
- + Reads PDFs, docs and web pages in place, with a browser extension
- + Genuinely free for listening, with no credit counter to watch
Limitations
- − Free plan restricts saving the audio, which rules out anything you publish
- − We could not re-read the plan limits on 27 September 2026 — naturalreaders.com/online renders pricing in JavaScript and /online/pricing.html now 404s, so treat the numbers on its site as the source of truth, not ours
- − No API, no cloning, no studio
Pricing read: not re-verified 2026-09-27 — see limitation
Murf
The studio-first option, if a UI mattered more to you than Play.ht's API did
- Free tier
- Murf publishes a free plan, but murf.ai/pricing returns a JavaScript shell to a plain fetch and could not be re-read on 27 September 2026 — read it yourself before you rely on a number
- Paid from
- Paid tiers previously started at $29/mo Basic; confirm on murf.ai/pricing
- Commercial use on free
- No
- Voice cloning
- Custom cloning is an enterprise-tier feature
- If you are porting the API
- File-based REST API on higher tiers, no streaming output. A poor swap for a real-time Play.ht integration, a fine one for batch narration.
Strengths
- + Closest thing here to Play.ht's studio experience: paste text, pick a voice, tune emphasis per sentence, export
- + Voice library skews corporate and e-learning, which is where a lot of Play.ht volume actually lived
- + Video sync and background-music mixing are in the product, not bolted on
Limitations
- − We are not printing a free-tier figure we could not verify on the day — check murf.ai/pricing
- − No streaming API output, so conversational use cases need a different vendor
- − Cloning is gated to enterprise, unlike ElevenLabs at $6/mo

Play.ht vs the Free Alternatives: What Actually Differs
| Aspect | Play.ht | Best Free Option | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can you still sign up? | No — play.ht does not resolve | All six | This is the whole reason the page exists |
| Largest free monthly allowance | Gone | Unreal Speech — 250,000 chars (~6 hours) | Cartesia is the largest credit-based one at 20,000/mo |
| Cheapest commercial licence | Gone | Cartesia — $5/mo Pro | ElevenLabs Starter is $6/mo; no free tier here grants commercial rights except Deepgram's metered credit |
| Streaming API (voice agents) | Dead — api.play.ht no longer resolves | ElevenLabs or Cartesia | Deepgram also streams; Unreal Speech and Murf are batch-only |
| Voice cloning | Gone, and the clones are not portable | ElevenLabs $6/mo, Cartesia $5/mo | Unreal Speech, Deepgram and NaturalReader do not clone at all |
| Free tier with no expiry clock | Gone | Deepgram — $200 credit, no expiration | Everything else resets or expires monthly |
ElevenLabs, Cartesia, Unreal Speech and Deepgram figures read directly from elevenlabs.io/pricing, cartesia.ai/pricing, unrealspeech.com/pricing and deepgram.com/pricing on 27 September 2026. Murf and NaturalReader render their plan tables client-side and could not be re-read on the same day, so no figure for either is asserted here — that is why they rank below tools with smaller free tiers.
Porting a Play.ht Integration: Four Things That Break
1. Your cloned voices are not portable
This is the expensive one, and no comparison table shows it. A cloned voice lives inside the vendor that trained it. With no dashboard and no export endpoint, a Play.ht clone cannot be moved — you re-clone from the original audio at the new vendor, or you lose the voice. If you still have the source recordings, that is a $5-$22/mo problem at Cartesia or ElevenLabs. If you do not, any published back catalogue in that voice is now unmatched, and the honest fix is to re-record the source rather than approximate it.
2. The failure is at DNS, so your retries make it worse
A dangling CNAME does not return a 500 you can back off from — it fails to resolve. Code written to retry a transient API error will hammer a resolver and stall a queue instead of falling through to an error path. Grep for api.play.ht and play.ht across your repo, your workers and your no-code automations (Zapier and Make steps fail as silently as a cron does), and make the call path fail fast.
3. Voice IDs do not translate, so your content table needs a migration
Play.ht voice identifiers are meaningless to every vendor here. If you stored a voice ID per row — per article, per course module, per character — you need a mapping pass, not a config change. Audition replacements against your own longest script, not a vendor demo, then write the mapping down before you backfill: the second time you regenerate a library, the thing you will wish you had is the table.
4. Credits and characters are not the same unit
Play.ht metered characters. ElevenLabs and Cartesia meter credits, which vary by model and by output quality; Unreal Speech still meters characters; Deepgram meters money. Re-cost your actual monthly volume in the new unit before you pick, because the cheapest headline price on this page is not the cheapest at 10 hours a month — at that volume Unreal Speech's free 250,000 characters and ElevenLabs' 10,000 free credits are not close to the same product.
Why Two Tools Here Have No Numbers
Murf and NaturalReader are both reasonable Play.ht replacements and both belong on this page. Neither has a free-tier figure in the table above, because on 27 September 2026 murf.ai/pricing and naturalreaders.com/online returned JavaScript shells to a plain fetch, and the old naturalreaders.com/online/pricing.html now returns a 404. We could have copied last year's numbers forward. That is exactly how Play.ht itself stayed on our lists with a "12.5K chars free" label attached to a product that had already stopped resolving — so the rule here is that an unverified number gets named as unverified and ranked below a verified smaller one.
If you are choosing between them, open their pricing pages yourself. If you maintain either tool and want the row filled in, the fastest path is to send us the listing — we read vendor pages, not press releases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Play.ht shut down?
Yes. Checked 27 September 2026: play.ht has no A record and returns 'Could not resolve host', its nameservers are a.ns through d.ns.facebook.com (as are play.ai's), api.play.ht points at an AWS load balancer that no longer resolves, and app.play.ht serves an expired TLS certificate. playht.com answers HTTP 200 but is a ParkLogic parking page. There is no signup, no dashboard and no API.
What happened to Play.ht — was it acquired?
The evidence points that way. Both play.ht and play.ai now delegate DNS to Meta's nameservers, which is what happens when a domain moves into Meta's estate, and the PlayAI voice team's move to Meta is the reason the standalone product stopped being maintained. We are describing the DNS we can read, not an announcement: no shutdown notice was published on the domain itself.
What is the best free Play.ht alternative?
ElevenLabs for the closest like-for-like on quality and API shape, with 10,000 free credits a month. Cartesia if your integration cared about latency, with 20,000 free credits a month and the cheapest commercial licence here at $5/mo. Unreal Speech if you generated long-form narration at volume — 250,000 free characters a month is about six hours of audio. All three figures read off the vendors' own pricing pages on 27 September 2026.
Can I move my Play.ht cloned voice to another tool?
No. A cloned voice cannot be exported from a vendor whose dashboard and API are both gone, and no other vendor can import one. If you still hold the original recordings you can re-clone: ElevenLabs does instant cloning from $6/mo and professional cloning from $22/mo, Cartesia does instant cloning from $5/mo. If you do not hold the recordings, the voice is not recoverable.
Is there a free Play.ht alternative I can use commercially?
Effectively one: Deepgram's $200 pay-as-you-go credit, because metered usage is commercial usage with no separate licence tier. Every other free tier on this page excludes commercial use — ElevenLabs puts the commercial licence on Starter at $6/mo and Cartesia on Pro at $5/mo. If the audio ships to customers, budget those few dollars rather than reading a free tier optimistically.
What replaces the Play.ht API?
ElevenLabs or Cartesia for streaming use cases like voice agents, Deepgram if you want published concurrency limits and a non-expiring credit, and Unreal Speech for cheap batch narration. Expect to change more than a base URL: voice IDs do not map across vendors, and the billing unit changes from characters to credits everywhere except Unreal Speech.
