Refraction is a browser-based AI code toolbox organised as a set of narrow, named operations rather than an open-ended chat window. You paste a block of code, choose the language or framework, and pick the transformation you want: detect bugs and suggest fixes, convert the code to another language, generate unit tests, add inline documentation, explain what the code does, add debug statements, or extract hardcoded literals into named variables. Several operations go beyond code-to-code work — generating a Content Security Policy from a description, converting CSS between frameworks, producing Mermaid diagrams from a description, writing CI/CD pipeline configuration, and generating SQL queries. The constrained-operation design is the point: each action has a known input and a known output shape, which produces more consistent results than asking a general assistant the same thing, and it makes the tool usable by developers who have not built a habit of prompt engineering. Editor extensions bring the same operations into the IDE on paid plans. Refraction suits developers working across unfamiliar languages, engineers retrofitting tests or documentation onto an inherited codebase, and small teams that want shared query and generation history without deploying anything. The free tier is capped at ten generations, after which a subscription is required, and the vendor answers the obvious question about code retention directly in its FAQ rather than burying it in a policy document.
