OpenBudget connects real bank, card, loan and brokerage accounts to an AI assistant so you can ask questions about your own money in plain language instead of exporting a CSV. Connections run through Plaid across more than ten thousand US institutions, credentials never touch OpenBudget's servers, and the product cannot move money — it is read and categorise only. Once connected, ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Hermes or OpenClaw can query transactions, balances, budgets, debts and trends through the OpenBudget connector, and because those assistants support recurring tasks, a weekly or monthly financial check-in can be scheduled rather than remembered. The tooling exposed to the assistant goes beyond raw transaction access: automatic categorisation into a hundred-plus categories, persistent category rules so a merchant classified once stays classified, item-level splitting of mixed purchases across budget categories, and card and loan tracking with balances, APRs, due dates and payoff options. There is also a spreadsheet path for people who would rather not leave Google Sheets or Excel — pick a sheet, map accounts to tabs, and OpenBudget keeps headers, new transactions and pending updates current automatically, with no CSV export step. The higher tier adds investment accounts, so holdings, dividends, buys and sells become answerable too. Coverage is United States institutions only, and the trial converts to a paid subscription on day seven unless cancelled, with an email warning on day six.
