Excalibur

Open-source coding agent with a build/don't-build discovery gate and a replayable immutable run log

0
open-sourceExcalibur Core is open source under Apache-2.0 and installs free from npm with `npm install -g @excalibur-oss/excalibur`; the local dashboard (`excalibur serve`) runs as a single local process with no account and no SaaS component. The site lists a separate Enterprise track alongside Core, but no figures are published on the pricing anchor — Enterprise terms are handled through the Contact page. Model inference is billed by whichever provider you point it at; the CLI displays per-run cost inline (a sample run shows $0.42). The product is labelled Beta.View full pricing →

About Excalibur

Excalibur is an open-source AI coding agent built around the whole product cycle rather than just the code-writing step: discover, build, verify, ship. Its Discovery gate is the part with no obvious equivalent elsewhere — before a line of code is written it weighs clarity, evidence, scope and risk on a proposed piece of work and returns a recommendation of build, validate, or don't build, turning a vague idea into a scoped work item and killing bad work before it costs anything. The engine is an immutable, append-only event log, and the company's claim is that the stream is the run: the live view, the replay, the dashboard and the audit trail are all renderings of the same bytes. That makes time-travel practical — you can scrub a run like a video, rewind live mid-session, and fork a new run from any step, with the good prefix replaying from cache for free so only what changed re-executes. `excalibur serve` opens a task-first web dashboard embedded in the CLI as a single local process with no account and no SaaS dependency, so the board runs on your own machine. Runs display their own cost and safety mode inline. Core installs from npm as @excalibur-oss/excalibur and is Apache-2.0 licensed; the project is in beta and offers a separate Enterprise track alongside the open-source core.

Excalibur Pros & Cons

Pros

  • +The don't-build recommendation is a genuinely different value proposition among coding agents
  • +Fork-from-cache makes iterating on a long run cheap
  • +Fully local and Apache-2.0 — no account, no vendor lock

⚠️ Cons

  • Still in beta
  • No published Enterprise pricing
  • The event-log model is a bigger conceptual shift than a drop-in CLI agent
