About Sourcebot

Sourcebot is a self-hosted code search and code understanding tool aimed squarely at large multi-repo codebases, and it positions itself as a cheaper drop-in for Sourcegraph. It deploys as a single Docker image via one npx command and gives you fast search across every repo and branch with regex, symbol, and filtered queries, plus git history and blame, a file explorer, and a code viewer. That layer is free. The part that matters in 2026 is the agent context layer. Coding agents only see the repo on your machine, which is why they confidently propose changes that break three services they never read. Sourcebot exposes an MCP server so Claude Code, Cursor, and other agents can search and read across every repo in the company before they answer — the demo shows a migration question scanning 2.3M files across 12,400 repos in under a second, then grounding the answer in three specific sources. Ask Sourcebot extends the same index to people who aren't engineers: PMs, support, and new hires can ask questions across all repos plus Jira and Confluence and get grounded answers instead of interrupting a developer. Code navigation adds go-to-definition and find-references across the whole org. Because it is self-hosted, source never leaves your infrastructure, which is the usual blocker for pointing a hosted tool at a private monorepo.

Sourcebot Pros & Cons

Pros

  • +The free self-hosted tier is a complete code search product, not a crippled demo
  • +Source never leaves your infrastructure
  • +Agent context across every repo fixes a concrete, well-known coding-agent failure

⚠️ Cons

  • Self-hosting means you own indexing, upgrades, and uptime
  • The AI features that justify it for most teams are all behind the $20/user tier
  • Value scales with repo count — a single-repo team gains far less

Who Is Sourcebot Best For?

👤Engineering orgs with dozens or thousands of repositories
👤Teams running coding agents that keep missing cross-repo context
👤Companies that can't send private source to a hosted code-search vendor
