Photopea is a full raster and vector image editor that runs entirely in a browser tab, and it is the closest thing on the web to a free Photoshop substitute — it opens and saves PSD files with layers intact, and also handles XD, Sketch, Figma, XCF, and RAW alongside the usual PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF. It is not a stripped-down web toy: it implements layers, layer masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, blend modes, brushes, selection and pen tools, filters, and a scripting API. Because the whole thing is client-side, files never have to leave the machine, which is a meaningful advantage over cloud editors when the images are confidential and the reason a lot of workplaces allow it where they would not allow an upload-first tool. Accounts are optional and exist mainly to sync settings — theme, language, colors, and tool options — across devices. The commercial model is unusual and worth understanding before recommending it: the free tier is ad-supported and complete, Premium simply removes the advertising, Team Premium lets one payer cover a whole roster of members who join by team ID, and a separate Distributor account exists for companies that embed the editor in their own site via iframe and want it whitelabeled with the ads, social buttons, and Photopea branding stripped out. That embedding path is a real product: the Photopea API is free to use inside an iframe and configurable, which is why the editor shows up inside a surprising number of third-party web apps.
