About Kilo Code
Kilo Code is an open-source AI coding agent that runs in VS Code, JetBrains, a CLI and a hosted cloud, with the same agent behaviour across all four surfaces. Its distinguishing commercial choice is that it separates platform access from inference: the extension itself is free and open source for individuals, and you decide separately how the model calls get paid for. You can route to free models through the Kilo Gateway, bring your own Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure or AWS Bedrock keys at zero markup, run local models through Ollama or LM Studio, or subscribe to a credit pass. That structure is the pitch — most coding assistants bundle a margin on inference into the seat price, and Kilo removes it, which is why the marketing leads with 'models at cost, no markup, no lock-in.' It supports over 500 models and offers an Auto Model router that picks a strategy per task within a capability and cost tier you choose. Operationally it runs parallel isolated worktrees so several agents can work at once without stepping on each other, and an agent command centre gives one view of local and cloud sessions. Paid tiers exist for teams that need governance rather than capability: usage analytics, an AI adoption score, shared agent modes, shared BYOK and centralised billing.
