Gems is a desktop AI knowledge assistant that inverts the usual personal-knowledge-management bargain. Tools in that category normally ask you to file, tag and structure information first so that you can retrieve it later; Gems asks for none of that and instead answers questions across everything you and your team have ever written, in whatever form it already sits. It runs as a native desktop app on Apple Silicon (M1 and M2), Apple Intel and Windows, summoned by a global keyboard shortcut rather than by opening a web tab, which is the interaction model that makes it usable mid-task. Ask a question in your own words and it returns what the company calls a Gem: a structured, written-out answer synthesised from your connected sources, not a ranked list of documents you then have to read. Text can be clipped from anywhere on screen to supply context for a question, so you can ask about something you are currently looking at without copying it into a chat window. Integrations connect the tools where knowledge actually lives, with the free tier limited to one, Plus to two and Pro unlimited. The company reports more than 20,000 users. The tier structure is unusually generous at the bottom — unlimited interactions with the personal AI are included even on the free plan, with integration count rather than usage as the paywall.
