BotCost.dev is a free analyser for a cost most site owners never itemise: AI crawlers eating bandwidth. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Bytespider, CCBot, PerplexityBot and a dozen others crawl continuously, and on a typical 50,000-visitor-per-month site the vendor estimates around $180 a month in bandwidth going to scrapers nobody invited — against a backdrop where roughly 38% of all web traffic is now non-human. The tool is deliberately small and does three things. You drag in an Nginx, Apache, Cloudflare or Vercel log file; it matches every request against 19 known AI bot fingerprints entirely in your browser, with nothing uploaded to a server; and it generates a ready-to-paste block rule for Cloudflare WAF, Nginx, Next.js or robots.txt. No account is required and results come back in seconds. The in-browser processing is the detail that makes it usable at work — server access logs contain visitor IPs and request paths, and a tool that wanted them uploaded would be a non-starter for most teams. Beyond the analyser there is an edge verification component with sub-10ms latency running at Cloudflare's edge, so blocking does not cost real users anything measurable. It is in beta and the free analyser is the whole public product today; treat the bandwidth-cost figures as directional estimates rather than an invoice.
