AnythingLLM is a private AI assistant that runs entirely on the user's own computer, with no account, no API keys and no token limits on the desktop build. That configuration answers the objection that keeps a lot of regulated and privacy-sensitive work away from hosted assistants: if the model never leaves the device, there is no data-processing agreement to negotiate and no vendor retention policy to audit. The desktop app bundles retrieval-augmented generation over your own documents, agent workflows, a meeting assistant that automates notes and summaries, and background jobs for recurring automated tasks, plus a mobile app that syncs so the same workspace is available away from the desk. The project is open source with a large GitHub following and publishes counters for desktop downloads, tokens processed locally and dollars saved by users against hosted alternatives. For teams there is a separate cloud offering that provides a private multi-user instance with tenant isolation, fine-grained admin controls over what users can see and do, white-labelling of the interface, and the same RAG and agent capabilities out of the box — you supply an LLM API key. Docker self-hosting remains free for small teams, so the paid tiers sell managed hosting and multi-user administration rather than the core capability.
