vatnode is an EU VAT validation API covering all 27 member states plus Northern Ireland, built around a problem most VAT lookups ignore: proving the check happened when an auditor asks about it years later. Set your own VAT number as the requester once in dashboard settings and every check of a valid VAT number returns the EU Commission's official consultation number automatically — the audit token you attach to an invoice record — or fails with an explicit error rather than a silent null on an otherwise successful response, which is exactly the failure mode that leaves finance teams unable to evidence a check. The second design decision is resilience: when a national source is unavailable, vatnode falls back automatically to national tax and company registries so validation keeps working, and returns enriched company data such as name, address and registration date in the same response. It also serves VAT rates for 45 European countries. Responses come back in under 50 milliseconds when cached, and there are code samples in cURL, Node.js, Python, PHP, Go and Ruby. Data is processed and stored in the EU. For AI workflows the service publishes both an MCP server and a SKILL.md at its root, so an agent can discover and call it without a hand-written wrapper — an unusual amount of agent-readiness for a tax-compliance API.
