Szum is an opinionated chart design system rather than a charting library: you supply data and intent, and it produces a validated, publication-ready chart under a compact grammar with six curated themes that coordinate typography, color, axes, labels and spacing together. Change the theme and the entire chart moves as one, which is the thing hand-rolled Recharts or matplotlib output never manages across a document. The interesting engineering is the validation layer, and it is built with agents in mind. Every edit is checked before it commits: if a mark references a field that does not exist in the resolved data rows, the change is blocked, the last valid chart stays live, and the error names the offending channel, the missing field and the fields that are actually available. An agent that writes a broken chart definition gets a specific, machine-actionable correction instead of a silently wrong picture — and Szum offers an explicit fix when it can verify the repair. You can start wherever you already work: ask ChatGPT or Claude over MCP, use the browser editor, call the API and SDK for PNG and SVG rendering, or create on canvas through the Figma plugin. All four paths build the same chart definition, which can then be exported as an image, an editable Figma asset, a Slack or Notion share, or a responsive interactive embed with tooltips and legend controls behind one iframe.
