SurfSense is an open-source research workspace positioned against NotebookLM, with the crucial difference that its corpus is the live open web rather than documents you have already collected. It runs agents that crawl a set of connectors on a question and synthesise an answer with citations: Reddit, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Indeed, Google Maps and Google Search are all named connectors, with the catalogue described as growing. That connector list tells you the intended jobs — competitive intelligence, market and financial research, academic literature scans, hiring-market analysis, and tracking how your brand appears in AI overviews, which is a research problem most notebook tools cannot touch because they cannot see the live web. Output is not limited to text: the product generates artefacts including podcasts and videos, and supports scheduled automations so a research question can be re-run on a cadence rather than asked once. Access is deliberately three-way — the hosted platform, a REST API, and an MCP server — so the same connectors can be driven by your own agents rather than only through the UI. A macOS desktop app is available. Commercially it avoids subscriptions entirely: self-host the full platform for free with your own keys, or use the hosted version on pay-as-you-go credit.
