Octarine is a Markdown note-taking app for people who want the local-first, plain-file guarantees of Obsidian with a tighter, more opinionated default experience and an AI layer that does not phone home. It is bootstrapped and built by a single developer, sold as a one-time $79 license rather than a subscription, and the AI features deliberately require you to bring your own API key or point at a local LLM — so the writing assistant, chat-with-your-notes and weekly AI recap run on infrastructure you control and cost you nothing extra in app fees. The core is a WYSIWYG Markdown editor with unlimited workspaces, daily and weekly notes, a graph view and full-text search, and task migration between days for people running a daily-log workflow. Pro layers on templates, pinned notes and folders, per-folder sorting, custom filtered views, note properties, a theme creator, focus mode, video annotation, note types, related notes, read-only notes and note sharing, plus export to PDF, HTML and DOCX rather than plain text only. macOS, Windows and Linux builds all exist and one license key covers three devices simultaneously with unlimited deactivations, and it includes access to the iOS app. The tradeoff is exactly what the pricing implies: no venture backing means slower development and a smaller plugin ecosystem than the incumbents.
