Workspaces are backed up on a schedule (weekly on the entry tier, daily/weekly/monthly above it) covering all pages and child pages, databases and data sources, media files and comments, written out as Markdown for portability and longevity or as JSON. The design decision that matters most is storage: backups land in your own cloud storage provider rather than the vendor's, so there is no lock-in and no dependency on the vendor's retention policy or continued existence. Restore is the feature most alternatives lack entirely — point-in-time recovery puts a workspace back to a specific moment in a few clicks instead of hand-diffing exported files, and on the Pro tier you can restore to a different workspace or directly to a workspace root rather than only back into the source. Backup rotation schedules automatic deletion of older backups on a 2/4/8/12-week cycle, with advanced rotation on Pro keeping everything from the last 15 days plus one per month and one per year. A separate Google Sheets Sync feature keeps Notion databases mirrored to Sheets one-way or two-way, syncing every 30-60 minutes on Starter and every minute on Pro. Pricing is flat rather than per-workspace, which the vendor calls out directly as a comparison point. Pro allows read-only workspace access instead of the default read-write, which is the right posture if restore-to-source is not needed.
