About Lightpanda
Lightpanda is a headless browser written from scratch in Zig for machines rather than people. The premise is that Chrome headless is a graphical browser with the screen turned off — it still carries the rendering pipeline, the compositor and the memory footprint that go with drawing pixels, all of which are dead weight when the consumer is a crawler or an AI agent. Lightpanda executes JavaScript and builds the DOM but does no graphical rendering at all, and the published benchmarks on its own site put execution at roughly nine times faster than Chrome on the same workload (5 seconds against 46) with a correspondingly smaller memory footprint. It is explicitly not a Chromium fork or a patch set, which is both the technical claim and the risk: a from-scratch engine has to reimplement web-platform behaviour that forks inherit for free, so real-world compatibility is the thing to test against your own target sites before committing. Installation is a single shell command with no signup required, and there is a hosted cloud offering with browser-hours billing on top of the open-source engine. A newer layer, Lightpanda Agent with PandaScript, lets you drive a browser session from a single LLM call and then replay that recorded script for free afterwards — which is the cost-control move for agent workloads, since the expensive model call happens once rather than on every run.
