CodeGPT is a bring-your-own-key AI coding assistant that installs as a VS Code extension or a JetBrains plugin and refuses to sit between you and the model. The pitch is cost control: you plug in your own API keys from any of fifteen-plus providers, or point it at a local runtime like Ollama or LM Studio, and the only rate limits you hit are your provider's. The vendor is explicit that it does not profit by metering your usage, which is the opposite of how most assistants in this category are priced. Functionally it works in three passes — it reads the codebase, co-writes a plan with you, then executes, showing every file it opens and every edit it proposes before anything is written. That review-before-write loop is the feature the product leads with. Around it sit MCP support for wiring the assistant into APIs, docs and databases, a rules system for enforcing house style across generated code, a live context meter so you can see how much of the window a task is consuming, and terminal access. Model swapping is a first-class action rather than a setting buried in config: reach for one model for deep reasoning, another for long context, another for speed. The vendor reports two million-plus installs. The extension itself is open source.
