Gen-3 Alpha is Runway's flagship model and it shows. The cinematic quality is exceptional — smooth camera movements, realistic lighting, consistent motion within clips. Prompt adherence is strong for detailed scene descriptions including camera direction ('slow dolly push toward a woman at a rain-soaked café window'). Complex multi-element scenes are handled well. At 5 credits per second, a 10-second clip costs 50 credits — so budget management matters, but the quality justifies the cost for professional work.

Runway's image-to-video is among the best in the industry. Uploading a reference image and describing motion produces convincing animations — a still portrait comes alive with natural head movement and subtle expressions, a landscape photo gets realistic wind and water motion. The motion prompt system gives good control over camera movement direction and speed. Results vary by image type — photorealistic inputs work better than illustrations, and faces animate more naturally than complex scenes.

Motion Brush is one of Runway's most powerful and unique features. It lets you paint areas of an image and specify directional motion for each region — leaves blow left, a character walks right, water flows down — with other areas remaining still. It takes practice to master but gives a level of motion control that generalist text-to-video can't match. For product videos, brand content, and effects-heavy shots, Motion Brush produces results that would otherwise require expensive compositing work.

Runway's video-to-video feature lets you apply a style prompt to existing footage — convert a talking head clip to animation, give documentary footage a cinematic film look, or apply a consistent visual style across clips for brand content. Results are uneven but impressive when they work. Low-motion footage (slow pans, talking head) transfers better than high-action content. For brand stylization projects, this is a valuable tool that can dramatically reduce post-production time.

The Extend feature continues clips from their last frame, enabling longer sequences by chaining generations. Coherence between segments is better than most competitors but still noticeably imperfect — motion can shift slightly between clips. Inpainting lets you mask and replace specific regions of video, useful for removing unwanted elements or adding effects to existing footage. Both features work best on low-complexity scenes and require experimentation to get consistent results.
